Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoes
8.5/10 (Expert Score)The Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoes are versatile, all-around running shoes that meet the requirements of their category and add a touch of fun. They are comfortable and lightweight with a slightly narrower upper, a soft and bouncy midsole that is not overly high, and a thick outsole with excellent grip and durability. They are versatile and comfortable for slower, low-intensity runs. However, they are also easy to pick up the pace with, and thanks to their low weight and springy midsole, you can maintain a faster pace. Since the midsole is not too high, the shock absorption is average, making them suitable for anyone up to a half marathon distance and for more experienced runners at longer distances. They are a good choice for beginner runners, even as a first pair of running shoes.
Description
Puma Velocity Nitro 4 upper
The upper of the Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoe is made of engineered knit material , which is more breathable than average. It has several extra layers, some of which are functional, and design elements that bring back the style of the late ’90s. The Velocity Nitro 4 upper uses Puma PWRTAPE technology, which means extra layers that provide better, more secure foot hold. The upper is snug and on the narrower side. The thin tongue has smaller pads, gusseted, and wider than average and provide good support for the foot. The highly padded, stiff heel collar provides stable, good foot support.
Puma Velocity Nitro 4 midsole
The Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoe’s midsole is made entirely of a redesigned foam called NitroFoam. This foam is lightweight, responsive, and springy. However, the outsole is thicker than average, which dampens some of the springiness, giving the Velocity Nitro 4 a balanced, medium-soft-to-hard midsole. This versatility allows you to pick up the pace while remaining comfortable at lower intensities. The outsole is slightly stiff, but the shoe’s torsional stiffness is low, making it comfortable for slower runs as well. Though the midsole is not particularly high, it provides perfect shock absorption for half marathons; experienced runners can also run longer distances in them. Due to its low torsion rigidity and soft midsole, however, the shoe is not very stable. Therefore, if you pronate, the Velocity Nitro 4 may not be the right choice for you. Additionally, the forefoot does not bend strongly because the midsole is soft and flexible, so transitions are flexible rather than fast.
Puma Velocity Nitro 4 outsole
The outsole of the Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoe is made from a soft material called PumaGrip rubber compound that has excellent grip properties. Despite its softness, the outsole has good wear resistance. The Puma Velocity Nitro 4 running shoe’s outsole is thicker than average, perhaps even more than necessary. The outsole does not cover the entire midsole. There is a distinctive transverse cutout and segmentation in the middle, as well as longitudinal segmentation that splits into two on the outsole. This preserves the midsole’s flexibility and low torsion rigidity. It’s unclear why the outsole is so thick, as they clearly saved weight with the upper and light, not too high midsole. In my opinion, less rubber would suffice for asphalt.
