Asics Gel Nimbus 25 running shoes
8/10 (Expert Score)The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 has a much thicker outsole, yet it weighs almost the same as its predecessor, which is a feat. That said, it is a heavier, slower shoe. A big change from the previous version, a bold move for such a popular line. The new midsole foam FF Blast Eco+, while indeed much lighter, is less soft and has lost some of its dynamism. That said, the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 is still a good maximum cushioning running shoe for lighter days.
Description
The ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 Running Shoe is a running shoe with maximum cushioning. Not the softest, but not energetically bouncy either, however it is very comfortable. This shoe debuts Asics’ new FF Blast Eco+ foam in the midsole, which is slightly stiffer, but because it has a higher outsole than the 24, it also has more cushioning.
Gel used to be the Nimbus’s main standout feature, but over the years the Nimbus range has progressively reduced its gel content, to the point where the Nimbus 25 now only has a small hidden gel unit in the heel. The gel doesn’t make much difference to the ride, and much of the cushioning softness comes from the midsole foam anyway.
The upper of the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 running shoe is made of knitted mesh for a soft subtle feel and good stretch, which is important for foot support. The tongue is also knitted and flat, which is a bit odd for a shoe that prioritizes comfort. The toe section, the front of the shoe, is narrow, even though the upper stretches well.
The midfoot of the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 running shoe is the real interesting thing. It provides maximum cushioning, making the shoe an excellent choice for light or recovery runs. The new FF Blast Eco+ feels noticeably denser and less bouncy, so the 25 isn’t as versatile as its predecessor was, in return this foam is much lighter. At the heel, the outsole thickness, 40.5mm, exceeds the maximum 40mm accepted by the International Association of Athletics Federations for racing, but I don’t think that will ever be a problem as the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 running shoe is not a racing shoe. The drop has also been reduced from 10mm to 8mm, but it’s not noticeable. What is noticeable is that the increased midfoot thickness has made the shoe stiffer. This isn’t necessarily a disadvantage because it allows the sole to retain its rockered, cradle-like shape better. The sole is also wide for height, which increases stability.
The outsole of the ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25 running shoe is made with soft ASICS Lite rubber in the front and AHAR (high abrasion resistant rubber) rubber in the heel. This solution provides both good traction and high durability.
