Description
The Asics GT-2000 12 running shoe, the latest release from Asics’ mid-range stable running shoe. There are more expensive (Kayano) and cheaper (GT-1000) stable running shoes from Asics. I can’t hide the fact that I am impressed with what Asics has been doing lately. This year they have come out with updates and made bold big moves in their running shoes that few have the guts or the ability to do. Much has changed with the new Kayano, Magic Speed, Nimbus, Cumulus, and the year isn’t over yet (the Novablast is coming out soon, which we’re excited about). The 12th version of the GT 2000 has changed a lot too. They’ve corrected a few things on the upper, completely redesigned the midsole, and the stability elements are completely different. The GT-2000 series has always been, and still is, a moderately stable, comfortable everyday running shoe, but with the option of running faster paced sections.
The upper of the Asics GT-2000 12 running shoe is an updated Jacquard mesh material that stretches well, holding the foot in place. The most criticized part of the previous version, the tongue, has been completely reworked, is much thinner than before and is now fixed on both sides. The heel collar is moderately padded, sufficiently stiff, holds the foot well. The heel has been made much higher, with a plus tab, which may be unusual for many. As the Jacquard mesh is quite flexible, the upper holds the foot perfectly without the tighter lacing, but for runners with wide feet it might be a bit tight, for them it is worth buying the Wide version of the GT-2000 12. The breathability of the upper is average, it can be a bit warm in summer.
The midfoot of the Asics GT-2000 12 running shoe has been completely changed from the previous version. It’s taller, and instead of the previous FlyteFoam Blast, it’s now made entirely of the more flexible, softer and lighter FlyteFoam Blast Plus foam. In the heel area, the PureGel insert now provides better shock absorption, but as with the Kayano, the PureGel insert is no longer visible from the outside. The new foam and higher midsole provide a more flexible, dynamic ride, helped by the fact that the slightly stiffer LiteTruss technology that provided stability has been removed from the midsole. The stability of the Asics GT-2000 12 is provided by the 3D Guidance System. This technology is basically a special design of the midsole geometry, which is designed to keep the foot and ankle stable and straight. The 3D Guidance System has several elements: the sole is wider, the heel and the forefoot are both provided with edges that prevent the foot from tipping in either direction, the midfoot is bent over the upper, forming a sidewall, the forefoot forms a curved rail (Guidance line), the heel is slanted. Stability is also enhanced by the fact that the top part holds the foot tightly. Overall, the stability of the GT-2000 12 is almost imperceptible when running, with non-intrusive support for the foot and ankle.
The outsole of the Asics GT-2000 12 running shoe is made from Asics’ best blend of AHARPLUS™ and AHAR™ LO-HRD, which provides great traction and is very durable with slow wear. The outsole is articulated, so it doesn’t make the shoe stiffer, but the insole features a longer continuous outsole section for stability. The grooves in the outsole allow the shoe to hold its ground on lighter terrain, not just firm surfaces. The only flaw in the outsole is that it doesn’t start at the edge of the heel section, there is a 1-2mm gap where the midsole can wear more heavily (same with the Cumulus 25).
Over all, the Asics GT-2000 12 running shoe is a versatile, stable running shoe that is comfortable but also dynamic when needed. The 3D Guidance System for stability does its job unnoticeably, keeping the foot well supported. If you’re looking for a moderately stable shoe, the Asics GT-2000 12 is one of the best choices.
