On Running Cloudeclipse running shoes

Description

The On Running Cloudeclipse running shoe is a very high cushioning, lightweight shoe for longer runs that can be used for faster stretches if needed. The On Running Cloudeclipse running shoe features the same highly successful CloudTec Phase technology as the On Running Cloudsurfer 7, but with a higher midsole and the inclusion of Speedboard in the bottom of the midsole found in most On Running shoes, making the shoe’s midsole more stable, dynamic and stiff.

When I first ran in the On Running Cloudsurfer 7 running shoe, the first to use CloudTec Phase technology, I was impressed with how soft and comfortable it was. Although I loved it, I thought it was a little too soft for me and that I would like to try the same shoe with a Speedboard. With the Cloudeclipse running shoe, I got my wish. In fact, the 10 mm dorp, which was unusually high for me, was reduced in the Cloudeclipse and the midfoot was also raised, making the Cloudeclipse a perfect running shoe for long, not too fast runs.

The upper of the On Running Cloudeclipse running shoe is made of a soft mesh material that has good breathability. The upper is roomy so it won’t squeeze those with wider feet. Although wide, it holds the foot well, also due to the fact that the bottom holes of the laces are wide, so they can be tightened well. The tongue of the shoe is knitted, fixed on both sides, thin, and has small pads on it so that the laces do not press the foot. The heel collar consists of two parts, the bottom is a stiffer part, while the top of the heel collar is moderately stiff. The upper part of the Cloudeclipse is medium cushioned, comfortable and holds the foot very well.

The midsole of the On Running Cloudeclipse running shoe uses CloudTec Phase technology, which means that the angle of the oval holes in the midsole are not the same, giving it different dynamics and softness in the rollover. This solution is truly unique and sets it apart from all other running shoes. The midsole material is made from the same Helion foam as the other On Running running shoes, but it is very high, 40 mm thick at the heel and 34 mm thick at the front of the shoe. The Helion foam is basically a harder foam, but with the CloudTec Phase solution the end result is very soft and comfortable. On Running says it’s a double layer, but I don’t understand what they mean as there’s only one set of holes in the midsole. The high height of the midsole means that it has great shock absorption, which makes the shoe suitable for longer runs. The Speedboard plate on the bottom of the midsole makes the midsole harder and stiffer, so it’s not as soft as the Cloudsurfer, but it also gives the shoe dynamism and stability. The Speedbord also helps keep the midsole geometry rigid, which is a rocking “rocker” geometry with a good, smooth rollover. It makes it easier to run faster paced sections in them and even maintain higher speeds over longer distances. Overall, this makes the midsole a moderately soft, moderately fast rigid midsole with high shock absorption and a very good and smooth rollover.

The outsole of the On Running Cloudeclipse running shoe covers a relatively large area of the midsole, but is articulated and well grooved. The rubber compound of the outsole is soft, so it has very good traction even on wet asphalt, but it does wear a bit faster because of this. The quicker wear is compensated by the thickness, because the outsole is not thin, with enough volume placed on the midsole.
