Description
The Nike Downshifter 13 Running Shoe is Nike’s low-cost, neutral running shoe that can be a good choice for beginner runners as a first running shoe. The upper is very comfortable, cushioned, the shoe has good stability, enough cushioning in the sole, the cleat sole has good traction, and it has good abrasion resistance. It’s not as responsive, not as dynamic so it might not be a good choice for more advanced runners, but for running your first 1000km and getting into running, the Downshifter 13 will be a good choice if you’re looking for a cheap running shoe. Of course there are cheaper Nike trainers out there, but they are not running shoes.
Nike Downshifter upper
The upper of the Nike Downshifter 13 running shoe is all about comfort. The upper is made from a double-mesh material that is comfortable but has only moderate breathability, so it can be hot in the gym or on summer days. The tongue is very cushioned and comfortable. The tongue is not attached, but it has a lace loop to help keep it in place. The lower part of the heel collar is stiff but the upper part is softer, like the tongue it is well cushioned so very comfortable. The upper can also accommodate a wider foot. The foam of the midsole folds over the upper at the mid and heel to keep the foot stable.
Nike Downshifter midsole
The Nike Downshifter 13 Running Shoe Midsole is a midsole made from EVA foam that provides good shock absorption and is more hard than soft. The stability is definitely good, but it’s not too stiff, so it’s also comfortable. Less energetic and non-responsive, but at a lower pace, you can run half marathons in it. The midfoot height is 31 mm at the heel and 21 mm under the toes, giving a drop of 10 mm. This higher drop is better able to unload the ankle and leg muscles. By designing a slightly stiffer midsole with good cushioning and a stable, higher drop for the Downshifter 13, Nike is clearly showing that it’s aiming for beginner runners.
Nike Downshifter outsole
The outsole of the Nike Downshifter 13 running shoe has a articulated, but large surface area covering the midsole. The two longitudinal articulations make the shoe even more stable, and the front cross articulation helps smooth the rollover. The midsole is made of a medium-hard material with a deep pattern for good traction. The abrasion resistance is good, and because the outsole is thick, it is durable, lasting up to 6-800 km of running, but it depends on the runner wearing it.
Summary
Overall, the Nike Downshifter 13 running shoe can be a very good choice for beginner runners. Besides being inexpensive, it has a comfortable upper, is stable, has good shock absorption, and is durable. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money on your first running shoe, the Downshifter 13 may be one of your best options.
