Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoes
8.6/10 (Expert Score)Overall, the Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoe is a great combination of high cushioning and good energy return. It’s not a lightweight shoe, so it’s not best suited to faster runs, but for longer runs the benefits of high cushioning and good energy return are well demonstrated. It can also be a good choice for runners with a heavier build because of its design, stability and very good durability to withstand extreme loads.
Description
The Mizuno Wave Sky 7 Running Shoe is a highly cushioned, highly durable everyday running shoe that is comfortable, stable and provides good foot support. Going against market trends, Mizuno has not designed this shoe to cut down on the use of materials in order to keep the shoe lightweight. The shoe’s upper, outsole and midsole are all designed for comfort and durable construction, which is what makes the Wave Sky 7 special. The high cushioning and durable construction specifically benefit runners with heavier builds or who want to run longer distances. The price of a sturdy, durable build is that the shoe weighs 309 grams, which is heavier than average, so it’s not the best choice for fast runs.
The upper of the Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoe is made of a mesh material called “Smooth Stretch Woven”, it is flexible and therefore hugs the foot very well. The mesh fabric has good breathability, so even in hot weather the foot doesn’t get too hot. The tongue of the shoe is padded, which increases comfort and provides even better support for the foot. The heel collar is also thickly padded, rigid, holds the heel well and increases stability. The upper provides maximum comfort and stability, but it is more for runners with wider feet, which is fine, as the shoe is also designed for runners with heavier or overweight feet.
The Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoe midsole is made up of 2 external foams. Just under the foot is Mizuno Enerzy Core foam, which gives you a soft comfortable feel while running. Underneath is the Mizuno Enerzy foam, which is responsible for dynamic kick for energy return. This is a stiffer but more energetic foam. This harder foam also makes the running shoe more stable. Overall, the use of two different foams gives a soft comfort feeling, but also dynamics and stability. The midsole is high, 40mm thick at the heel and 32mm thick under the toes, giving the shoe good shock absorption. The midsole is slightly curved at the forefoot, which helps to ensure a quick and smooth roll over. While the Mizuno Enerzy foam is a distinctly dynamic foam that helps with fast runs, overall the midsole is more suited for slower, longer runs.
The outsole of the Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoe doesn’t cover the entire midsole, it’s well articulated so it doesn’t make the sole structure stiff. The outsole is made of a carbon rubber compound called X10, which provides good traction and does not wear out quickly. Mizuno didn’t skimp on the amount of outsole, so they added a very durable outsole to the shoe, which is one of the big advantages of the Mizuno Wave Sky 7.
Overall, the Mizuno Wave Sky 7 running shoe is a great combination of high cushioning and good energy return. It’s not a lightweight shoe, so it’s not best suited for faster runs, but for longer runs the benefits of high cushioning and good energy return are well demonstrated. It can also be a good choice for runners with a heavier build because of its design, stability and very good durability to withstand extreme loads.
