Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe upper

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 upper

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe upper is made from a one-piece knitted mesh material. This is not a conventional classic construction: the upper is not rigid and almost wraps around the shape of your foot like a sock. To ensure that this less structured, sock-like material holds the foot securely, it is thicker than average but also more flexible. Breathability is good, although you can also feel that the weave is denser in many areas to keep the foot securely in place, which naturally reduces airflow in those sections.

The shoe has no separate tongue; it is integrated into the upper material, with a denser and more flexible knit. There is a pull tab at the top of the tongue that also works as a kind of cushion. It is worth tying the laces over this area so they do not “bite” into the instep. Its original purpose is also useful, as together with the other pull tab on the heel collar it helps you get the shoe on, because the opening you step through is quite narrow. The lacing system is very interesting and unconventional, but there is a reason for this as well. A thick seam runs along each side of the upper, and the laces pass through holes formed in these seams. You can tighten them effectively, and they hold the foot securely.

The heel collar is reinforced and has a larger strip of padding around the top. This is the only reinforced section of the upper, and it is necessary to provide adequate foot lockdown. The final lace eyelet sits quite low and far back, which is also necessary for secure foot hold.

The Neo Vista 3 upper fits true to size in length (slightly long), while its width is more on the narrow side. It feels snug, although it stretches slightly after a few runs. It may be uncomfortable for wide feet, but it is comfortable for narrow, normal and slightly wide feet.

How is the Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe better / different from the Mizuno Neo Vista 2 running shoe?

The new version provides significantly better support through the upper. It holds the foot more tightly and securely. The heel section is stiffer and more padded, while the mesh material of the upper has a denser weave. The tongue is also slightly thicker and provides better protection against lace pressure. These changes have made breathability slightly worse, although it can still be considered good. There is not much change in the midsole foams, as the previous version also used two similar foams. The plate, however, has changed significantly. Thanks to the new 3D design, the shoe has improved stability and feels more dynamic. The midsole is less unruly and easier to control depending on how much force you put into toe-off. The outsole layout has changed and now covers a larger area of the midsole. The grooves are also slightly deeper, and their density varies more depending on how much grip is required in each area.

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe midsole

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 midsole

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe midsole consists of three layers. The upper foam layer is the lightweight, flexible and dynamic nitrogen-infused Enerzy NXT foam introduced a few years ago. It is a TPU foam and also offers good durability. Underneath is a firmer EVA foam layer, which plays a role in both stability and cushioning. Between the two layers is an entirely new curved, glass-fiber-reinforced plastic plate. The key feature of the new design is that the plate splits into 3 sections in the middle: the central section curves upward and is convex, while the two lower sections curve downward and are concave. These 3 spring-like elements therefore work from both directions to help produce a dynamic toe-off.

The Neo Vista 3 has a high-stack midsole, measuring 44.5 mm at the heel and 36.5 mm at the forefoot, with an 8 mm drop. The softer upper foam layer is thicker, so for stability it is important to have a firmer foam underneath, while the plate also improves stability. The fact that the midsole is wider than average serves the same purpose.

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 plate

It does not feel unstable, as the 3D plate and lower layer provide good support, although it cannot be described as a highly stable shoe either. Thanks to the plate, torsional rigidity is above average, but not excessively high, and the shoe does not feel overly stiff even at lower intensities.

It feels explosive, dynamic and bouncy while running, although you can also feel the softness of the upper foam layer. It propels you forward while running and makes it easy to take long, springy strides. The midsole geometry is curved at both the front and rear, resulting in fast and smooth transitions. This is Smooth Speed Assist, which helps support speed during faster running and saves energy on longer, lower-intensity runs so your legs fatigue later.

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe outsole

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 outsole

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe outsole is made from MIzuno’s proprietary X10 rubber compound, which is harder than average and therefore offers good abrasion resistance. The outsole is of average thickness and, combined with its good wear resistance, can be considered durable. Because the outsole uses a harder rubber compound, its grip can be described as average, although this is improved by the large number of moderately deep grooves in the outsole. Grip is better on dry surfaces, but I experienced some uncertainty on wet surfaces.

The outsole is segmented to save weight and prevent it from increasing the stiffness of the midsole. There is a long, deep cutout underneath the midsole that splits into two at the front. This helps reduce weight but also improves stability. Because this cutout is quite large, stones can easily get stuck in it, so it is worth avoiding them. I have run in all 3 Neo Vistas, covering well over 1000 Km in total, and so far stones have only become stuck in the cutout on 2 occasions, although I did try to avoid roads where this was likely to happen.

What is it like to run in the Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe?

Cushioning and midsole

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe has a high-stack midsole, measuring 44.5 mm at the heel, which is above average, so its cushioning is also above average. The lower foam layer is slightly firmer, which further increases cushioning. Thanks to the two different foams and the plate positioned between them, the Neo Vista 4 midsole offers high energy return and feels dynamic and explosive.

The high-stack midsole provides strong cushioning.

Stability and guidance

The upper foam layer of the Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe midsole is a softer but resilient foam with weaker inherent stability, but the plate in the midsole and the slightly firmer lower foam significantly improve the shoe’s stability. The midsole has an 8 mm drop, making it suitable for both forefoot and heel strikers. The midsole is strongly curved at both the front and rear, resulting in fast and smooth transitions. This is the Smooth Speed Assist technology, which uses these fast transitions to help your legs fatigue later. The 3D plate in the midsole noticeably raises the arch. This feels unusual when you first step into the shoe, but while running it noticeably helps with toe-off.

Upper and comfort

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe upper wraps very closely around the foot and conforms well to its shape because it is made from an unstructured knitted mesh material. Apart from the heel section, there is no padding, but the thick knitted material provides excellent comfort.

The narrower Neo Vista 3 upper holds the foot securely.

Landing and grip

Thanks to the average drop, landings feel comfortable both for heel strikers and runners who land on the forefoot. Only a small portion of the sole is in contact with the ground because it is strongly curved at both the front and rear. The plate in the midsole maintains this curvature while running, so transitions feel smooth and fast. The outsole covers a large area of the midsole, giving the Neo Vista 3 good grip on dry surfaces, while on wet surfaces its grip is also slightly above average.

Pace and dynamics

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe is a versatile plated shoe, which means it is not overly stiff at lower intensities but can also be used for faster running. The 3D plate in the midsole contributes to a more dynamic toe-off, helping you fatigue more slowly during longer runs and supporting your pace during faster sessions.

The 3D plate provides a more energetic toe-off and better control.

Long runs vs tempo vs training

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe is a perfect choice if you are preparing for a race. It is versatile, so it works well for long training runs, but it also performs well during fast or interval sessions. It is stiffer than average, but not excessively rigid during lower-intensity, slower runs, while still supporting faster running.

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 is a good choice for fast and long training sessions.

Who is the Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe recommended for – and who is it not for?

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe is recommended for experienced runners looking for a fast yet comfortable and versatile running shoe for faster training sessions and race preparation.

The shoe is suitable for race preparation, but it is not a lightweight racing shoe.

The Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe is not recommended , if you are looking for a low-stack, stable running shoe that fits very snugly and holds your foot securely. It is a fast shoe, but because of its higher weight it is not fast enough for racing. If you plan to race faster than 4 minutes / km, it may be worth choosing a faster shoe for racing.

What has changed compared with the previous version? Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe vs Mizuno Neo Vista 2.

Every part of the Neo Vista has changed compared with the previous version, the Mizuno Neo Vista 2 running shoe, but the differences are most noticeable in the upper and midsole.

Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe alternatives – comparison

Nike Vomero Plus futócipő

Nike Vomero Plus: it offers a similar ride but does not have a plate, which makes it more flexible but also less dynamic and less exciting to run in. It has a higher drop, so it sits lower at the forefoot, and it is more than 20 grams heavier

Hoka Skyward X 2 futócipő

Hoka Skyward X 2: the Skyward X 2 is taller, slightly heavier and much stiffer because of its carbon structure. Because it has a lower drop, its midsole height remains above 40 mm even at the forefoot. The carbon structure also makes the Skyward X 2 significantly more stable.

ASICS Superblast 3 futócipő

ASICS Superblast 3: there are many similarities in ride feel, but the Superblast is much lighter and has no plate, so I do not consider it a true alternative. The Superblast 3 has a more flexible midsole and is more versatile and stable

Is there a difference between the men’s and women’s Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoes?

Unusually, the Mizuno Neo Vista 3 running shoe is available not only in women’s and men’s versions but also as a unisex model. This further supports the fact that there is no structural difference between the men’s and women’s Neo Vista 3 running shoes. The difference in weight is primarily because the women’s Neo Vista 3 is measured in a smaller size, and its midsole is therefore proportionally lower as well.
