The upper of the Asics Gel-Excite 10 running shoe is made from jacquard mesh, which is breathable and comfortable. The heel collar is low and not stiff, but it is thickly padded for good foot support. The tongue of the shoe is medium cushioned, provides good foot protection and is comfortable. The tongue is not fixed, but the shoelace has a small loop to help prevent it from slipping out of place while running. Despite the upper being made from a thin mesh material, it’s remarkably durable, and the same is true of the cushioned heel.

The midsole of the Asics Gel-Excite 10 running shoe is made of Amplifoam+ foam (the previous version had only Amplifoam, without the plus, which was a bit stiffer than Amplifoam+). The foam is comfortable, durable, has good shock absorption, but is not dynamic or springy. The flexibility of the outsole is very good, the midsole is not stiff despite the average thickness of 29mm. The midsole flexes on the outsole which helps with foot support. This technique is called GUIDANCE LINE by Asics to refer to the way it guides and holds the foot. Although the word GEL is in the name, and there is a gel insert on the heel of the midsole of the shoe, it is not the same as the PureGel insert found in the more expensive Asics Gel shoes. It’s a much thinner gel insert that’s barely noticeable, but still provides good cushioning for the shoe

The outsole of the Asics Gel-Excite 10 running shoe doesn’t completely cover the midsole, which is good because it doesn’t stiffen up an otherwise soft and flexible midsole. The rubber compound on the outsole is hard, which is good because it is harder to wear, but it also makes the traction a little worse. You can’t complain about the grip on dry surfaces, but on wet surfaces the grip is not perfect. The outsole is 3mm thick, which is average, but because it is made of a harder rubber compound, it wears more slowly.

Overall, the Asics Gel-Excite 10 Running Shoe is a very good versatile running shoe for its low price. It’s a perfect choice for beginner runners because it has good cushioning, is comfortable, and holds the foot well.
