Hoka Arahi 6 running shoes test

The Hoka Arahi 6 running shoe is the latest version of the company's stable shoe, which has changed very little from the previous version, but is still a light, stable, comfortable running shoe that can be used for long distances.

Sturdy running shoes are used to heavier weights, but the Hoka Arahi 6 is a stable, overpronator running shoe that's not heavy. The support isn't intrusive, though a little unusual at first, and overpronating runners will enjoy it on their long runs. The Arahi is basically a stable version of the Clifton.

The upper is comfortable and holds the foot well. The elevated heel section comes in handy for down and up, but can bother many runners. The shoe is wide, so the upper won't squeeze those with wide feet. Great for ventilation, you won't get your feet hot in the shoe. The handle is slightly more cushioned than medium, very comfortable.

The Hoka Arahi 6 manages to stay lightweight while maintaining an average sole thickness of 32.5mm, which is high. The cushioning is so good that you can confidently use the shoe for recovery runs. Because the Arahi's sole is wide almost all the way through, it provides a very stable run.

Hoka J-frame technology

Stability is provided by J-frame technology. This is a J-shaped frame that sits in all the way and is reinforced on the outside at the heel to prevent overpronation, i.e. the ankle from leaning inwards. The thick sole makes the shoe stiff, and the CMEVA foam that makes up the midsole material becomes noticeably stiffer in cold conditions.

The outsole doesn't cover the entire sole, but perhaps that's a bit of an exaggeration here. It's understandable that they've minimised the surface area of the outsole to save weight, but after a few hundred kilometres you're wearing out the midsole. The outsole is only 2mm thick, so where there is one, it wears off relatively quickly. The lack of outer tyres not only affects wear, but also grip. Okay, the Hoka Arahi 6 is not a shoe for fast runs, but it deserves more grip than that.

In terms of its versatility, the Hoka Arahi 6 is one of the best choices for those who overpronate. And for those who want to run longer distances with their overpronating feet, the Arahi 6 is the best choice, as it's lightweight and well-cushioned.
