On Running Cloudstratus 2.0 running shoes

The second version of the On Running Cloudstratus (which doesn't officially carry the number 2, like most multi-version On running shoes) is a departure from the On Running shoes you've come to expect, a much softer, more comfortable shoe. Versatile (can be used for multiple workouts), very good quality, and looks good too.

The 2021 version of the On Cloudstratus returns with a redesigned Helion foam, which gives you one of the softest runs of any On shoe.

The Helion foam is very versatile in extreme temperatures. On says cushioning remains premium - whether it's cold or hot outside. In other words, this means that on incredibly hot days, the foam doesn't become soft and spongy (as can happen with many old EVA or new rubber-based foams). And on very cold days, the foam doesn't freeze and become hard as a rock (again, like what happens with old EVA or new rubber-based foams).

The On Running Cloudstratus uses two layers of the usual on running "clouds" that provide a unique cushioning experience. For those who like tougher running shoes, you'll have no problem running longer distances, recovery runs and using the Cloudstratus 2. But the two layers and softer than usual foam won't make the shoe unstable.

For faster runs, the weight alone makes the On Running Cloudstratus unsuitable, and it doesn't help that the Helion foam is too soft to make the shoe fast. Although the Cloudstratus 2 also has a Speedboard, the shoe doesn't have as good an energy transfer. The Speedbord is an ON Running development, a fluid-injected sheet of thermoplastic polymer sandwiched between the CloudTec® midsole and upper. Its function would be the same as a carbon plate, only slightly softer.

The outsole tread provides good traction on a variety of tread surfaces from dry and wet pavement to gravel trails.

The upper is very premium and comfortable. It has good breathability. The heel section is adequately cushioned and holds the foot well, however the midfoot and the forefoot are wider than usual, not sure if they are good for narrower feet. The star-shaped laces help to tighten this wider upper well, but will be more comfortable for people with normal or wider feet. The tongue is secured to the shoe by an internal sock, which makes the On Running Cloudstratus even more comfortable.

Overall, the On Running Cloudstratus 2 Running Shoe is a very comfortable running shoe with a thick upper, good cushioning but not soft, and therefore stable. Although it has some technology to help you run faster, it is primarily recommended for easier longer runs rather than shorter faster runs
