Saucony Hurricane 24 running shoes
8.3/10 (Expert Score)We’re excited to see the return of the Hurricane line with the Saucony Hurricane 24 Running Shoe, as a great high-cushion, comfortable, stable running shoe has been missing from Saucony’s lineup. The Hurricane 24 is a comfortable, stable running shoe for slower but longer runs, with a stability that doesn’t feel intrusive but still supports pronating and supinating feet over long distances. It is also available in a wider version, making it ideal for runners with wider feet and a heavier body weight. Although a stable running shoe, it can also be a comfortable long distance running shoe for those with a neutral foot position.
Description
The Saucony Hurricane 24 Running Shoe is Saucony’s highly cushioned, comfortable and stable running shoe. It’s a rebirth, the previous version came out over 3 years ago and for a long time it seemed like there would be no new version. It’s not hard to place the Hurricane 24 in Saucony’s product lineup, in some ways a stable version of the Triumph 22, or a more cushioned version of Saucony Guide and Tempus running shoes, which are also stable running shoes. Compared to other running shoe brands, Hurricane 24 is in the same category as Hoka Gaviota 5 or Asics Gel-Kayano 31, cushioned, comfortable stable running shoes. I have seen and read several reports and descriptions from Saucony, and in none of them is the adjective stable used for the Hurricane 24, the reason being that they do not use strong elements that are typical of stability. This kind of solution is not unique to Saucony, several running shoe brand has been using indirect methods to achieve stability for the last 1-2 years.
Saucony Hurricane 24 upper
The upper of the Saucony Hurricane 24 Running Shoe is made of mesh material that has better than average breathability. The mesh material is comfortable, soft and flexible. The shoe fits true to size and also comes in a wide version, so if you have a wide foot, go for it. The tongue of the shoe is not gusseted, but it is not prone to shifting. The tongue is moderately cushioned, wide and lock the foot well. The heel collar is high, moderately cushioned, stiff at the bottom, as in stable running shoes, but more flexible at the top, so as not to interfere with the Achilles tendon. There’s a reinforcement in the middle two rows of eyelets to help the shoe lock the foot more securely.
Saucony Hurricane 24 midsole
The Saucony Hurricane 24 Running Shoe Midsole is made up of two layers. On top is a thicker PWRRUN PB foam for a soft, dynamic feel that Saucony uses most often in its performance-optimized or race day shoes. On the bottom is a thinner PWRRUN foam that is stiffer, this layer gives structure and stability to the shoe. The midsole foam height is 38mm at the heel and 32mm at the forefoot. This high dual-layer midsole provides very good shock absorption and comfort, making this shoe best suited for longer, slower runs and recovery runs. Less responsive but still flexible despite the height of the midsole. The energy return of the midsole is not bad, but since the shoe weighs 304 grams it does not support fast running. Stability is provided by the geometry of the midsole, CenterPath technology. CenterPath technology has 3 main elements: a wider midsole, higher sidewalls and an asymmetrical outsole design. The wider than average midsole provides better support, the inner midsole has more PWRRUN foam (asymmetric) which is harder and better able to resist the inward leaning (pronating) foot. The midfoot foam is bent over the upper like a half-tube, making it harder for the foot to lean in or out.
Saucony Hurricane 24 Outsole
The Saucony Hurricane 24 Running Shoe Outsole is a segmented, multi-piece design, which is a good solution because it keeps the outsole from being too stiff. The outsole is moderately stiff, thick and deeply ribbed to provide good traction and wear resistance. In the areas where the outsole is most likely to wear out (outside of the heel, front), the large amount of outsole overlay allows the shoe to remain durable.
