Brooks Ghost Max 2 running shoes
8.1/10 (Expert Score)Overall, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is a comfortable running shoe for longer, but not fast, runs. If you’re looking for a durable running shoe with a very comfortable upper, great cushioning and stability, the Ghost Max 2 could be a good option. The Ghost Max 2 can also be ideal for heavier runners, and since it comes in a variety of widths, it can also be a good choice for runners with wide feet. The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is heavier than its predecessor, but it’s worth sacrificing that 18 grams for comfort.
Description
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 Running Shoe is a comfortable running shoe with a cushioned midsole and a comfortable upper that is best suited for longer, slower runs, those who looking for maximum comfort for slower runs and no speed will love it. The Ghost Max 2 is not just a thicker midsole version of the Ghost 16. While the Ghost 16 has a 12mm drop, the Ghost Max 2 only has a 6mm drop, which makes a noticeable difference when running. The Ghost Max 2 has changed a lot from its predecessor. It has a new midsole material and a more cushioned, more comfortable upper.
Brooks Ghost Max 2 Upper
The upper of the Brooks Ghost Max 2 running shoe is clearly all about comfort. The upper is padded all over for maximum comfort. The upper is made of a mesh material that’s a little thicker than the previous version, so it’s a little less breathable. The toe box is wider and higher. Although a wider version of the shoe is available, the regular version is still wide. The tongue of the shoe is padded, not fixed, for a comfortable fit. The heel collar is stiff and very cushioned. The foam of the midsole folds over the upper, forming a sidewall to keep the foot stable while running.
Brooks Ghost Max 2 midsole
The midsole foam in the Brooks Ghost Max 2 running shoe is DNA Loft v3, just like the foam in the Ghost 16. This foam is different from the DNA Loft v2 found in the previous version. The DNA Loft v3 foam is a nitrogen-injected EVA foam that Brooks previously only used in the Glycerin line, a more expensive running shoe. The nitrogen makes the EVA foam lighter, more flexible and softer. Although the height of the midsole has remained the same (33mm at the front, 39mm at the heel) and the new foam is lighter, the weight of the shoe has increased by 18 grams, but this does not affect the feel much, as this shoe is intended for slow, comfortable running, walking or everyday wear. The Ghost Max 2 midsole is not a on the softer side, but comfortable midsole. It’s not hard, especially compared to Brooks running shoes, but it’s not soft either, but it does give the shoe very good stability. Also improving stability is the fact that the sole of the shoe is wider than average. The use of the new foam has definitely made the Ghost Max 2 softer and more comfortable than its predecessor. The midsole of the Ghost Max 2 is not only higher than the Gost 16, it also has a different drop. While there is only a 3mm difference between the heel height of the two shoes, the forefoot drop is 9mm, which is significant.
Brooks Ghost Max 2 outsole
The outsole of the Brooks Ghost Max 2 Running Shoe covers a large area of the midsole, but is segmented. The longitudinal segmentation gives the shoe good torsional flexibility despite the high outsole. The outsole has minimal transverse segmentation, but this does not make it stiff, and it also maintains the curved geometry of the midsole (rocker), which allows for a smoother rollover when running. Because the midsole can make contact with the ground over a large area, the Brooks Max 2 has good traction. The midsole is deeply grooved, which is another good point in terms of grip, and thick, which makes it durable.
Summary
Overall, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is a comfortable running shoe for longer, but not fast, runs.
