Description
The Adidas Ultraboost 5X Running Shoe is a very different shoe from the previous Ultraboost, almost an entirely new shoe. It has a taller Light Boost midsole (and foam composition), and the 5X does not have the large plastic cage that holds the laces together on the upper (the Ultraboost 5 without the X will be released soon and will have a plastic cage). The changes have also made the shoe 20 grams lighter, which is a noticeable difference. This makes the Ultraboost 5x a very comfortable, cushioned running shoe that is best suited for slower, daily runs of no more than half-marathon distance.
Adidas Ultraboost 5X Upper
The upper of the Adidas Ultraboost 5X running shoe is made of knitted stretch fabric. Knit uppers tend to be less breathable, and the Ultraboost 5X is no exception, with average breathability. The upper is all about comfort, not performance. The tongue of the shoe is one with the upper and is also made of a stretchy, flexible knit. The 5X doesn’t have the plastic cage that was typical of previous Adidas Ultraboost running shoes, a frame that went around both sides of the shoe and ended up in the lacing holes to hold the laces in place as you tightened them. Even with the change, the foot lock remained good. The heel collar is padded, with 1-1 extra padding on each side on the inside, in the same place where there is 1-1 plastic reinforcement on the outside. The heel collar is high, but the upper is soft so it does not interfere with the Achilles tendon. Because the upper material is flexible, it fits comfortably on wider feet, so runners with thin feet may want to buy half a size smaller.
Adidas Ultraboost 5X midsole
The Adidas Ultraboost 5X Running Shoe Midsole is officially made from the same foam as before, but is 9mm higher (38mm at the heel and 29mm at the forefoot), which creates a completely different running experience. The change is most noticeable in the forefoot, where there is finally some dynamism. Light Boost foam in this thickness gives a more dynamic, softer feel. Medium bounce, more for a quieter, slower pace, but definitely a fun, exciting foam. For better stability and faster, smoother transitions, the midsole also features an X-shaped Torsion System, which is most noticeable in transitions. More dynamic, quicker transitions. The Adidas Ultraboost 5X is a neutral running shoe, and the Torsion System does a good job of stabilizing the high midsole, but it doesn’t make it very stable. There’s no problem with the stability of the shoe, but for longer runs, a little more stability would be nice.
Adidas Ultraboost 5X Outsole
The outsole of the Adidas Ultraboost 5X Running Shoe features Continental rubber in the high-wear areas of the heel and forefoot. This rubber compound is harder than average, so it has better abrasion resistance. Because it is deeply grooved, it also has good grip. The outsole has also undergone a major change and now covers most of the midsole. In the middle is a softer, slightly translucent rubber that is softer, provides good grip and, because it is translucent, shows us the shape of the Torsion System X.
