Overall, the Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe is a great choice for everyday trail running and even supports faster runs because it is lightweight and flexible. Compared to trail running shoes, it has good breathability and a more comfortable upper. Good traction, it can cope with almost any terrain. Changes to the upper have made it 7 grams heavier, but it’s hardly noticeable. The price/value ratio is good, but it’s worth checking the price of the previous version before you buy, as it may be cheaper and overall the shoe hasn’t changed much.

Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoes

Description

The Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe is a versatile, relatively lightweight trail running shoe with very good traction and stability for everyday and faster runs. It is a good value for money choice, not expensive for what it can do. Compared to the previous version of the Saucony Peregrine 13 cross-country running shoe, the main change is the upper, which is more comfortable, but also slightly heavier. If the comfort of the upper isn’t that important to you, you might want to buy the cheaper older version.

Saucony Peregrine 14 upper

The upper of the Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe has changed the most from the previous version. The upper is made of a mesh, slightly stretchy material that has extremely good breathability. The upper is more comfortable, the tongue on both sides is more cushioned and thicker. The heel collar is on the stiffer side, but is padded and holds the foot well. The construction of the shoe will appeal more to those with a narrow foot, but you can also buy a wide and waterproof GTX version of the Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe. The forefoot of the shoe has a separate rubber layer that helps to protect the toes from rocks, kicked up pebbles, twigs and also provides a minimal amount of protection from moisture. As in the previous version, version 4 retains the pull tab at the heel (much needed), retains the small hook at the bottom of the laces to hook the running harness (Gaiter) into, and still has room for an elastic strap on the tongue to tuck the laces under so they don’t get in the way while running. Worth a special mention is the removable PWRRUN+ sockliner insole, which further enhances the comfort feel and adds some softness and stability underfoot.

Saucony Peregrine 14 midsole

The midfoot of the Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe has changed almost nothing. It’s the same 24mm thick PWRRUN foam at the front and 28mm thick at the heel. Compared to today’s trail running shoes, this is not very thick, but it is what gives the shoe its uniqueness. For a shoe that’s not thick, it’s good, it’s got decent shock absorption, but it’s not for ultra-running. The advantage of the lower midsole is that it can remain very stable, flexible, responsive and has a good feel for the ground. Even at this volume, PWRRUN foam can give you some dynamism, you can feel its softness and flexibility.

Saucony Peregrine 14 Outsole

The outsole of the Saucony Peregrine 14 trail running shoe hasn’t changed much, but that’s okay, it’s worked so well so far, it’s unnecessary to change it. Between the midsole and the outsole is a flexible rock protection layer, which doesn’t make the shoe stiff and can protect the foot moderately well from sharp rocks and stones. The outsole has 5mm thick spikes that are set in different orientations. The grip of the shoe is particularly good on almost all surfaces, even in wet conditions.
