Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoes
8.4/10 (Expert Score)Overall, the Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoe is a neutral shoe that provides a fast, lightweight, stable running experience with a high ground feel. We recommend it primarily for those who don’t want a soft, high-cushion trail running shoe for half marathons where you can run fast or even race. The upper is comfortable, breathable and offers good protection. The midsole is moderately soft, resilient, very flexible, and also provides dynamics. The outsole grips well on moderately difficult terrain, but can be slippery in heavier wet conditions.
Description
The Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoe is a lightweight, flexible, high ground feel shoe for everyday trail running. It supports fast running and has the cushioning to last up to a half marathon. With a low midsole and medium cushioning, it has good stability and allows you to run confidently on the trail. For beginners, I would only recommend them for shorter distances of 10-15 km, but experienced runners can run longer distances in them or even wear them for races. Based on the outsole design, the Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoe is best suited for moderately difficult, moderately technical terrain.
Compared to the previous version, the upper has changed the most, with better protection and durability, the midsole is almost unchanged, and the outsole has changed very little.
Fuji Lite 5 upper
The upper of the Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoe is made of a medium-thick, tightly woven knit fabric that has better-than-average breathability among trail running shoes. The material is not waterproof, but it tolerates moisture well. Compared to the previous version, the upper has more protective layers, especially on the forefoot of the shoe, where more rubber-like layers have been added. The lacing system has been redesigned so that the laces fit the foot better. The laces have a separate rubber strap where the laces can be hidden so that their movement does not interfere with running and they do not get caught in anything. The tongue of the shoe is wide and long with minimal cushioning, gusseted so it won’t slip sideways. Because the tongue is wide and long, it protects well against debris getting in. The heel collar is low, well cushioned and stiffer than average to lock the foot well. The uppers are lowered at the forefoot so they can be tight on a large volume foot.
Asics Fuji Lite 5 midsole
The Asics Fuji Lite 5 Trail Running Shoe Midsole is made with FlyteFoam Blast foam, a medium-soft, medium-hard material. The midsole has no rock protection layer, which makes the midsole very flexible. Because the midsole is not high (32mm at the heel), the ground feel is high and the shoe is very responsive. The lower midsole also gives the shoe a stable, secure feel. The FlyteFoam Blast foam in this volume can provide enough cushioning for half marathons, but if you’re running longer distances, you may want to choose another shoe. The midfoot rocker geometry makes transitions quick and smooth. The midfoot is designed for faster and shorter runs, but in this category it can hold its own with the competition.
Asics Fuji Lite 5 outsole
The Asics Fuji Lite 5 trail running shoe outsole is made with Asics’ proprietary ASICS®GRIP™ rubber compound, which provides good traction and abrasion resistance. Abrasion resistance also depends heavily on the terrain you run on, your weight, and your running techniques. The outsole features 4mm rubber lugs in a variety of shapes and orientations that provide good traction on moderate terrain. The area between the rubber lugs is designed to prevent mud from getting stuck, but that’s not the shoe’s strong point. In harder terrain, deep mud, wet rocks and roots, the shoe’s grip is noticeably weakened, so it may not be suitable for such runs.
