Description
Hoka Mach X 3 upper
The Hoka Mach X 3 running shoe has an upper made of thin warp knit with above-average breathability. Thanks to the knit construction, the upper is more durable and retains its shape better without stretching, even with prolonged use. The moderately padded tongue is soft and comfortable. It is slightly longer than usual, but this is not a problem as it does not rub the instep. The moderately padded heel collar has a stiff lower part and a softer upper part that does not irritate the Achilles. The upper fits true to size and is moderately wide. The good news is that the Mach X 3 is available in a wide version, which is rare in this category. The shoe’s upper is a great compromise between performance- and comfort-optimized uppers. It is lightweight, breathable, and comfortable.
Hoka Mach X 3 midsole
The Hoka Mach X 3 running shoe midsole consists of three layers. The top layer is made of soft, light, springy PEBA foam; the bottom layer is made of EVA foam; and a curved PEBAX plastic plate is sandwiched between the two layers. Although this plate is heavier and less flexible than a carbon plate, it improves stability and contributes to the shoe’s dynamism. The plate has an outward-facing wing that is also designed to improve stability. Initially, the Mach X 3’s midsole seems hard, but after a warm-up period, it softens and comes to life. It is versatile because it is not as stiff at lower speeds; however, it is clearly good for faster pacess and becomes more dynamic and bouncy during faster runs. Still, it’s on the stiffer side. Those who prefer stable, stiff fast shoes to soft ones will like this midsole. The curved (rocker) midsole helps with quick and smooth transitions. The midsole plate holds these bends well, further improving the shoe’s dynamics and speed.
Hoka Mach X 3 outsole
The Hoka Mach X 3 running shoe outsole is segmented lengthwise and crosswise. This segmentation slightly reduces torsional rigidity, as do the longitudinal segments in the midsole. These segments mainly contribute to comfort during low-intensity runs. This improves the shoe’s flexibility. The articulation of the outsole and the midsole cutouts also reduce the shoe’s weight, but pebbles can easily get stuck in the cutouts. For this reason, it is advisable to use the Mach X 3 only on asphalt or other solid surfaces. The outsole pattern and shallow groove depth do not make the shoe suitable for trail running. The thicker-than-average outsole improves durability, which is necessary for such medium-soft rubber compounds to prevent them from wearing out quickly.
Frequently asked questions about the shoe
Who are the Hoka Mach X 3 running shoes for and what kind of running are they suitable for?
The Hoka Mach X 3 running shoes are versatile, neutral shoes suitable for fast running. The upper is comfortable, performance-focused, lightweight, and breathable, yet cushioned. How has the Hoka Mach X 3 running shoe changed from the previous version?
The Hoka Mach X 3 running shoe has a significantly different upper. The upper of the previous version, the Hoka Mach X 2, prioritized performance over comfort. Its thin heel collar provided little cushioning and irritated the ankles and Achilles tendons of many wearers. In response to this criticism, Hoka radically redesigned the upper and corrected these flaws. As a result, the shoe is now more comfortable, though it is also heavier.
The outsole and midsole remain unchanged.
