Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 running shoes
8.7/10 (Expert Score)The Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Running Shoe is a fast, lightweight, but stable running shoe in a unique way. It’s primarily for fast runs, no longer than a half marathon, when you need some support and stability. The Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 running shoe isn’t overly stable, but you can feel the GuideRails technology that gives it that stability. It has a higher midsole than its predecessor, better forefoot support and comfort, and very good outsole traction, in addition to being durable. If you have a pronated foot but don’t want to run in heavy shoes or can’t find a fast running shoe with enough width, the Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 might be a good choice for you.
Description
The Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Running Shoe is a lightweight, stable, race-ready running shoe that is unique in several ways. First, the Hyperion GTS 2 is the only stable running shoe that is light, fast, and suitable for racing. ALL other brands of stable running shoes are heavy or medium weight. On the other hand, there are not many running shoes on the market that are light, fast, and suitable for racing, but do not have a narrow upper. Both are in high demand. There are fast runners who want to race and train in stable shoes, and there are fast runners with wider feet. Of course, the Hyperion GTS 2 isn’t perfect for everything, for example, I wouldn’t recommend it for distances longer than a half marathon, but I would also only recommend it for people with a good arch for distances over 10km.
Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 upper
The upper of the Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Running Shoe is made of a thin, breathable mesh material that’s more flexible than average. It’s volume is not large, but because it’s more flexible than average, it stretches more. The upper fits true to size and has a medium width, which is rare in the lightweight running shoe category, as these running shoes tend to have a narrow construction. The tongue is wide and thin, like a race shoe, and is fixed on the medial side to keep it from moving while you run. Because the tongue is wide and thin, it is advisable to smooth it out before running as it can be prone to wrinkling. It is a good idea to tighten the laces thoroughly and use the lace hole in the upper, as the upper is more flexible and allows more movement of the foot. The heel collar of a normal running shoe is usually very stiff and cushioned, while a racing shoe is the opposite. Since Hyperion GTS 2 running shoes fall into both categories, the heel collar is somewhere in between: moderately cushioned and stiff, but not overly so.
Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 midsole
The Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Running Shoe Midsole is made from a foam called DNA FLASH v2, a nitrogen-injected, soft, lightweight, flexible foam. Although the height of the midsole has been significantly increased from the previous version (34mm at the heel and 26mm at the forefoot), it has not been made heavier by replacing the foam used with DNA FLASH v2 foam. Stability in this shoe, as in most Brooks GTS (aka Go-To-Support) running shoes, is provided by GuideRails technology. GuideRails are the support on the inside of the midsole from the heel to the center of the shoe. This support helps keep the foot straight (vertical) but does not tilt the foot outward. This stability providing solution is not an aggressive, strongly felt stability, so it is not a 100% solution for those with highly pronated feet, but it is more than a neutral shoe. The midsole is firm in the rear and feels a bit stiffer, but unlike the rear, the forefoot is distinctly soft and flexible. The midsole has a rocker, or rolling, geometry that makes transitions quick and smooth. It provides great support for fast runs up to half-marathons, but for longer distances, the disadvantages of the lower midfoot are noticeable.
Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Outsole
The outsole of the Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 Running Shoe is made from Brooks RoadTack Rubber, a softer-than-average rubber compound that provides better-than-average traction. Even though the outsole is made of a softer rubber, it still has good grip. The outsole doesn’t cover the entire midsole, but it does cover the midsole well in places where the sole is more demanding. In order to increase the stability of the shoe, there are fewer cutouts on the inside of the outsole, which makes the outsole construction of the Brooks Hyperion GTS 2 running shoe stiffer on the inside.
