Description
The Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe is a comfortable trail running shoe for everyday runs, lightweight for its height and suitable for beginner runners. Although the outsole traction is good, it is not the best choice for heavier, rocky terrain as it does not have a rock protection plate. The flaws of previous versions have been corrected by Puma, making it lighter and providing great foot support. The midfoot is high compared to trail running shoes, so it will appeal most to those who prefer softer trail running shoes and less to those who prefer trail running shoes with high ground feel.
Puma Voyage Nitro 3 upper
The upper of the Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe is made from a dense mesh material with moderate breathability, keeping the foot warm on hot summer days. The mesh material of the upper makes it very durable due to the dense weave. The mesh material is complemented by several outer layers, one of which is the PWRTAPE layer, which reinforces the upper to provide better support and protection for the foot. The toes are protected by a rubber layer on the front, which also protects the foot from minimal moisture. There is also a GTX, or Gore-Tex, version of the Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe, which has better waterproofing. The tongue of the shoe is thin, continuing as an inner insert to hug the foot. The lacing system of the shoe is not standard, but it is very good. The lacing holes are laced, and the top lacing hole is a large plastic loop that continues around the heel collar to tie both sides of the shoe together. This results in an extremely strong, secure foot hold. The heel collar is stiffer, with medium cushioning that continues in a thin, elastic pull-on tab (can be distracting in short socks). The upper provides good protection against debris that may be thrown in. For those with wider feet, the upper may be too narrow in construction, which can be distracting when running on steeper slopes.
Puma Voyage Nitro 3 midsole
The Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe midfoot is made from Nitro foam, a well-known material in Puma running shoes This supercritical nitrogen-injected foam is lightweight, soft and has good energy dissipation. Because it has a high midsole (35 mm at the heel with an 8 mm drop), it’s responsive but has low ground feel. It has good dynamics and can be used for fast runs, but it is not a racing shoe. Optimised for slower medium to longer runs. Definitely enjoyable to run in because of the Nitro foam. The midsole is high and soft, which would lead you to believe that the stability of the shoe is not good, but the Voyage Nitro 3 disproves this, there are no stability issues.
Puma Voyage Nitro 3 outsole
The Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe PUMAGRIP ATR outsole covers the entire midfoot with small cutouts. The abbreviation ATR (all terrain) does not mean that the outsole is suitable for asphalt and terrain (as in Hoka shoes), but that it is suitable for all surfaces on cross-country runs, i.e. gravel, ice, mud. The outsole has 4 mm rubber spikes in different orientations and a very interesting technology used by Puma for the rubber spikes. The technology is called PWRADAPT, and the idea is that they have made visible gaps and cut-outs next to the spikes so that the spikes can move better. Overall, the traction of the shoe is very good, the wear resistance is also good, the durability depends on the intensity of use because of the gaps next to the spikes.
Summary
Overall, the Puma Voyage Nitro 3 trail running shoe is a durable trail running shoe with very good foot support, a fun, enjoyable midfoot, and is primarily for everyday runs. The high cushioning and secure foot support allow you to run longer distances in them. Good traction, but may not be the best choice for rockier terrain.
