Asics Superblast running shoes
8.8/10 (Expert Score)Over all, the Asics Superblast running shoe has impressive features, the most outstanding of which is its versatility. We’ve written about its versatility in many shoes, but the Superblast can give advanced, faster, race-going runners versatility. It is lightweight, has very good shock absorption, is dynamic, and is flexible for its sole thickness. It can be a good choice for those looking for a shoe for fast runs but don’t want to buy a stiff, carbon-plate shoe, but also for those looking for a comfortable running shoe for long distance runs. Beginning runners can use them, but they may not be able to take advantage of their features. The only drawback of the shoe is that small pebbles can easily get stuck in the sole and the price. It is a borderline case of whether this high price is worth this versatility.
Description
It’s hard to introduce in a few words what the Asics Superblast running shoe is or what it does, there are so many things to describe in one sentence. The Superblast is a fast, carbon plate-less, highly cushioned running shoe that is a versatile, lightweight shoe for its sole height, with features that couldn’t be in one shoe at the same time. It’s fast because the sole construction allows for fast runs, but it has no carbon plate so it’s not stiff. It’s high, with very high cushioning, making it suitable for longer runs. For a high sole thickness, it is stable and not as soft as it looks. It’s not that it’s a fast running shoe that you can run slower runs in, but that it’s good for slower runs. It’s good for those who heel, it’s good for those who toe, it’s just good for everyone, for all runs, and it’s very rare to find a running shoe like this. However, it does come at a price, which at asics.com is €200.
The upper of the Asics Superblast running shoe is made from a jacquard mesh fabric that is lightweight, soft and has average breathability. The tongue of the shoe is flat, with small cushions and lots of holes for even better shoe ventilation. The tongue is fixed on both sides, making it difficult to slip sideways. The heel collar is moderately stiff, not too high and moderately cushioned. The heel collar is also padded on the sides for good foot support. The width of the upper is average and may be narrow for those with wider feet. The durability of the materials used in the upper is average, but this will depend largely on the use of the shoe.
The midsole of the Asics Superblast running shoe is made up of two different types of foam. The thicker part on top is Flyte Foam Turbo foam and the thinner part on the bottom is the Flyte Foam Blast Plus layer. The Flyte Foam Turbo foam is used by Asics in their racing shoes It is a medium soft, good shock absorbing, dynamic and lightweight foam. Flyte Foam Blast Plus foam is used by Asics in many of its shoes, such as the Novablast, Kayano and GT-2000. Flyte Foam Blast Plus foam is dynamic, flexible and soft. The essence of the foam “sandwich” is that while the Turbo foam is light and dynamic, but not too soft, the outer Blast Plus is softer, making the shoe more comfortable. Overall, the thickness of the two layers is 45.5mm, making the Superblast one of the thickest outsole shoes currently available. Thanks to the high and moderately soft foam, the Superblast is stable, very light and dynamic for its height, but only moderately flexible, but not as stiff as the carbon-plate Metaspeed Sky or Edge with similar foam. As it doesn’t have a carbon plate, it’s also perfect for slower runs. The two different foams are what make the shoe so versatile. Easy to run fast in, dynamic but not bouncy, no trampoline effect like the Novablast has. But it is noticeably faster and more stable than the Novablast, thanks to the FF Turbo foam and wider than average midsole. The midfoot has a rocker geometry, which helps to roll over quickly and smoothly.
The outsole of the Asics Superblast running shoe is articulated, not completely covering the midsole. In fact, even the outer FF Blast+ layer of the midsole does not cover the FF Turbo foam above it, reducing the weight of the shoe. However, the resulting holes can easily trap small pebbles, which can be a nuisance (the only flaw of the shoe). The Superblast outsole is made of AHARPLUS rubber compound, which has better than average abrasion resistance and is more durable, which is why Asics doesn’t use much of it, the outsole is 3 mm thick. The rubber compound in the outsole is moderately soft, but with good grip, thanks to the deep grooves.
Overall, the Asics Superblast running shoe has some impressive features, the most notable of which is its versatility. We’ve written about its versatility in many shoes, but the Superblast can give advanced, faster, race-going runners versatility.
