The first Salomon running shoe was released in 2001. As is well known, running was not the main profile of Salomon, but it is becoming more and more so as Salomon running shoes have become very popular. Not for nothing.

Founded in 1947 by George Salomon and his father François, Salomon was primarily a manufacturer of sports equipment for winter sports. In 25 years, Salomon has become the world's leading ski-binding company.

In 1994, they tried to open up to new sports, but financially it was a huge drain on the company, and eventually the entire Salomon company was bought by Adidas in 1997 and Amer Sport in 2005.

Getting back to Salomon running shoes, apart from using their experience in mountain sports to date to come up with great trail running shoes, they were able to line up some pretty big names to join the brand. They quickly became known for Salomon running shoes, and not just known but well-loved for producing very high quality, high performance shoes.

The entry into the world of street, asphalt running shoes was not necessarily as successful. On the one hand, in 2014-15, they tried transitional running shoes like the Salomon City Trail running shoe, which was designed for more technical urban runs (cobblestones, stairs, uneven terrain). Ok, sometimes you might need one of those, but no one is going to buy a special running shoe for that. And anyone who thought it would be good on tarmac and off-road is rather disappointed.

The marketing machine didn't work so well when the first asphalt running shoes came out, and most people shunned them with suspicion.

Fortunately, by the end of the decade, the Salomon street running shoes were better offered, and the marketing was better too. The latter was a good thing, because the improved sales figures proved that there was a place for Salomon in this segment and that it was worth investing in improvements.

There are now, fortunately, quite a lot of Salomon running shoes for off-road and on-road, which we are very happy about and we try to showcase as many of them as possible.
